Magic Tree House #2: The Knight at Dawn – Chapter 4

1️⃣ Summary

Jack ran across the drawbridge and found Annie hiding behind a well in the courtyard. Jack and Annie tiptoed to the entrance hall and peeked in. There were lots of people strolling around. Some people in capes and furs were sitting at a long wooden table filled with food. Others were tossing balls or balancing swords on their hands. Some played funny-shaped guitars. At that moment, a shout came from behind them. A guy carrying a tray of food spotted Jack and Annie and shouted. Frightened, they ran away down the dimly lit hallway.

2️⃣ Sentence Practice

He hoped no one would notice him.
→ He hoped he could pass the exam.
→ I’ve always hoped that I would do better.

He shivered as he looked around for Annie.
→ I was excited as I looked around for the Da Vinci painting.
→ I was amazed as I looked over the whole city from the hill.

They stood on one side of the doorway and peeked in.
A giant fireplace blazed at one end of the noisy room.
→ Giant bird-like statues stood at both ends of the arched doorway.
→ A cat was sitting in one corner of the room.

People in bright clothes and funny hats strolled among the crowd.
→ Hagrid stood out among the crowd on the street.
→ Hermione always stood out among the students because of her knowledge.

A man carrying a tray of pies was standing a few feet away.
→ A man holding a bunch of flowers was running toward her.
→ A man wearing a parachute was jumping from thousands of feet up in the air.
    A man wearing a parachute was jumping from a plane high above.

3️⃣ Short Story

Harry Potter had always hoped he could go somewhere else. This was that moment.
Hagrid and Harry strode together across the crowded street. Harry hurried as he looked around for the Leaky Cauldron.
Hagrid stopped at one side of the doorway of the Leaky Cauldron. A bald guy stood at one end of the noisy pub.
When Harry went closer to the door, everyone who had been drinking beer and talking stopped what they were doing and stared at him.
People passing by on the street didn't mind at all, even though they were only a few feet away from the Leaky Cauldron.

✏️ Today's Reflection
Today, it didn’t take long to summarize the chapter and make sentence variations. Although it depends on how I’m feeling, it’s definitely getting easier. The Magic Tree House books are written using simple vocabulary. So I’m sure that if I keep practicing with easy words, I’ll naturally develop a feel for English.
